Colin Fitzgerald played a big role in helping the Varsity Blue Streaks pick up their first win of the 2021 season on Saturday morning at Cocalico High School in Denver, PA. The Blue Streaks’ senior infielder and pitcher provided 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief on the mound with 8 strikeouts after starting the day at third base. Dylan King, who started on the mound for MT, landed at third after the pitching change, but not before tallying 4 strikeouts of his own. At the plate, Fitzgerald gave the Blue Streaks their first lead of the day (3-2) with a 2-run shot over the left field fence in the top of the 4th inning. Township never looked back.
The Blue Streaks as a whole capitalized on a variety of Cocalico fielding errors which allowed 3 runners to advance and score on multiple hits in the 5th inning. A bases-loaded walk for Fitzgerald in the top of the 7th inning put an extra insurance run on the board for the Streaks. The Blue Streaks also were quick on the bases throughout the game racking up 4 stolen bases as a team (Kyle Musser 2, Drew Sassaman 1, King 1).
Now that the first game of the season is in the past, the schedule heats up starting with back-to-back-to-back game next week against Exeter, J.P. McCaskey, and Central York.
